Arsenic and Old Lace

Comedy by Joseph Kesselring
Directed by Judy Price

We meet the charming and innocent ladies who populate their cellar with the remains of socially and religiously "acceptable" roomers assisted by the antics of their brother who thinks he is Teddy Roosevelt and the activities of the other brother. Arsenic and Old Lace was a famous comedic success in New York, as well as on the road.

October/November 2008

Dracula

Drama adapted by John L. Balderston and Hamilton Dean from the original book by Bram Stoker
Directed by Sharon Russell

This first authorized adaptation of the Bram Stoker novel condenses the action while retaining the central conflicts between good and evil, east and west, and religion and science. All of the mystery and horror of the original novel is reproduced in the play as a small band of men work together to save the world from the contagion represented by Dracula.

The novel has been continuously in print ever since it was published, and the play has been successfully revived several times on Broadway.

January 2009

Working

Musical from the book by Studs Terkel, musical adaptation by Stephen Schwartz
Directed by Chuck Shutt

This musical adaptation of the Studs Terkel book examines the average worker's viewpoint - showing that he or she is anything but average. Based on a series of interviews with real working people - construction workers, waitresses, firemen, secretaries, and cleaning women - Working is both an exploration of the individuals' occupations and a lament for lost hopes and dreams.

March 2009

Laramie Project

Drama by Moises Kaufman & the Tectonic Theater Project members
Directed by Ed Browne

This remarkable play takes the form of a series of juxtaposed monologues, culled from hundreds of interviews that the authors conducted with residents of Laramie, WY, after the fatal beating of Matthew Shepard in 1998. Additional speeches are taken from journals the authors kept while they were involved in this project. From these fragments, a powerful whole is created, giving audiences a full picture of a quiet town suddenly thrust into the media spotlight and hastily branded "backward." Shepard's friends are heard from, as are the friends of his convicted killers. Masterfully woven together to breathtaking effect are statements from Laramie's religious leaders- some of whom condemn the murder, others of whom condemn the victim. Laramie Project is a thoughtful and moving theatrical tour de force.
