A Lesson Before Dying Brown Bag at Vigo County Public Library

Join the October 13 Brown Bag at 12:10 pm
at the Vigo County Public Library

Hear a discussion of the novel, A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines. Katherine Utley, former Terre Haute North English Teacher, will be the presenter. The program is co-sponsored by Community Theatre of Terre Haute where the play will open on Friday, October 21 under the direction of Jeff Lorick.

A Lesson Before Dying beautifully articulates many struggles inherent in all human life. Gaines explores the confrontation of one's imminent death, the determination of personal responsibility, the reciprocity found in the teacher/ learner relationship, and, ultimately, the true meaning of manhood and humanity. Portraying a bittersweet triumph of the human spirit, Gaines inspires the reader to learn his or her own life lessons. Jeff Lorick feels that the play focuses on these same themes and brings the book to life for theatre goers.
